Professor Omu Anzala

Professor Omu Anzala
Prof. Anzala is a Professor of Virology & Immunology in the Department of Medical Microbiology; The first Director of KAVI – Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), University of Nairobi, Kenya. He holds a degree in MBChB from the University of Nairobi, Kenya; a Diploma in Epidemiology - Tufts University in USA; a Masters in infectious diseases and PhD in virology and immunology - University of Manitoba, Canada and Postdoctoral Fellow at Molecular Immunology Institute, Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), Oxford University, UK.
Prof. Anzala pioneered the establishment of Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative (KAVI) in the year 2000 as a research unit at the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Nairobi aimed at conducting HIV vaccine clinical trials, basic science, and epidemiology of HIV in Kenya. Additionally, in 2013 Prof. Anzala was the center of the growth of KAVI from a research unit to a fully-fledged Institute of the University of Nairobi namely: KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research expanding its research mandate beyond HIV/AIDS to include research in infectious diseases, research in non-communicable diseases and knowledge synthesis & translation.
As the first Director of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research Professor oversaw unprecedented growth of the institute in infrastructure, implantation of research projects in immunology, virology (all under one health), behavioral Science, grants management and establishment of PhD training program for the next generation of scientific leaders.
Prof. Anzala’s academic career spans over 30 years, coupled with vast experience in grants writing, grants management, presiding on more than $2 million in grants per year for over 15 years, fostering both local and international collaboration, fostering community engagement, training, supervision, and mentorship. Supervised more than 30 master’s students and more than 13 PhD students to successful completion and continues to supervise and mentor. Additionally, authored and co-authored more than 200 publications in peer reviewed journals and presented abstracts in multiple international conferences.
Prof. Anzala is a member of Kenya National COVID-19 Task Force, Team lead of the University of Nairobi COVID-19 modelling committee, Member of African Vaccine Manufacturing Initiative (AVMI), Member of Kenya national Vaccine safety Advisory Committee, Member of African Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (AAVS), member of the Ministry of Health (MoH) Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Task Force, Board Member and Director of Walter Sisulu Foundation, Co-Chair of the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region Vaccine Safety Committee and Member of the Africa CDC Advisory Committee on Research Prioritization.

Dr. Marianne Mureithi
COO & Co-Head of Strategy
Dr. Mureithi is the current Chair, Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. She is also the Basic Science Research Team Leader KAVI Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR). She holds degrees from the University of Essex and the University of Bristol both in the U.K, and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, USA and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, SA.
At the KAVI-ICR, University of Nairobi, she is part of a successful collaboration with the Northwestern University, USA which was recently awarded a R01-NIH grant that seeks to characterize the early stages of HIV infection and determine the phenotype of the initial target cells in various mucosal tissues and explore the possible mechanisms underlying the establishment of mucosal viral reservoirs.
Additionally, she is involved in studies characterizing biological signatures in early HIV infection to advance vaccine and treatment design. She has authored several peer-reviewed publications and supervised several Masters and PhD students at the University of Nairobi and is actively mentoring the next generation of young outstanding African scientific leaders and researchers, who will assist in solving some of the continent’s greatest health and development challenges.

Dr. David Githanga, MBChB, MMed, PhD
He joins in the Institute as part of the vaccines division. This division aims to partner with stakeholders for vaccine development and immunization strategies against infectious diseases. It will engage in research and collaborations to advance vaccine science and increase vaccination coverage.
Dr. Githanga is an accomplished medical professional and clinical researcher with over 30 years of clinical practice at health institutions of great repute notably the Nairobi Hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital and Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital amongst others. Currently he is a consultant Paediatrician/Cardiologist based at the Nairobi Hospital.
He has demonstrable leadership capability and strategic thinking ability which have been instrumental in spearheading the growth, development, and integration of the Kenya Paediatric Association (KPA) both locally and regionally. Additionally, Dr. Githanga is the Chair of the Measles/Rubella Elimination Committee for the World Health Organization (WHO) AFRO Region.
Dr. Githanga has passion for children health and particularly as pertains to the environmental, immunization and nutrition within the broader public health agenda and has been a key national reference point and mentor in paediatric matters with immense contribution in areas of training including designing reference materials, delivery approaches and undertaking research on topical issues.

George Ichoho
Project Lead & NCDs Research Division
Mr. Ichoho is part of the Non-Communicable Disease Research division which is spearheaded by specialists in chronic disease management and prevention. The division concentrates on researching the causes, prevention, and treatment of non-communicable diseases. Additionally, he heads communications and strategy, which manages internal and external communications, public relations and health advocacy campaigns to enhance the institute’s visibility and public engagement through various media platforms.
Mr. Ichoho, a Cancer Biology specialist, brings his experience from academic and clinical research to the Institute. He holds an Undergraduate and Masters degree from the University of Sussex, UK. He lectures Molecular Biology at the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Nairobi and is a researcher at KAVI-ICR with research interests in lymphomas. He is also passionate about wellness through his volunteer experience for St. John Ambulance and Anthony Nolan

Dr. Jeanette Dawa
Infectious Disease Research Division
Jeanette Dawa (MBChB, MSc, PhD) is an epidemiologist and public health specialist with a background in medicine, public health and infectious disease modelling. She is the scientific manager at the Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA), at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. CEMA analyses available public health data to provide insights that support decision making in health. She joins the Wellness Institute Trust (WIT) as part of the Infectious Disease Research division.
She has managed several health projects within Kenya, working closely with the community, health care workers, county governments and the national government to support childhood vaccination against respiratory diseases, conduct surveillance for severe acute respiratory illness and strengthen infection prevention and control capacity within hospitals. Jeanette has previously served as Center Director for the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases – East and Central Africa (CREID-ECA), which is part of a NIH funded global network of research centers.
Jeanette has supported the Ministry of Health, Kenya in identifying top priority infectious diseases. She has also served as an external resource person for the Kenya National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (KENITAG), where she supported the systematic collection, assessment and review of available data to support evidence-based decision making in the field of vaccination. She served as a member of the modelling committee advising the Kenyan government on appropriate public health measures during the emergence of COVID-19 in 2020. Jeanette’s interests lie in the use of analytic methods to enhance the utility of surveillance data in decision making, and conducting research that leads to direct changes in practice and health policy.

Dr. Moses Masika
Infectious Disease Research
Dr. Masika joins the Institute as part of the Division of Infectious Disease Research which will look into disease pathology and epidemiology, with a focus on developing effective treatments and prevention strategies.
Dr. Masika is Medical Doctor with postgraduate training in Tropical & Infectious Diseases and Global Health, and Doctorate degree in Infectious Disease. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, University of Nairobi where he coordinates the Virology Section.
He is currently a Post-doctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Masika is a seasoned Educator and Research Scientist conducting research on emerging infections, zoonoses, vaccines, antimicrobial resistance and one health. He is also engaged in policy and communicating science to the public.
Dr. Daniel Muema

Dr. Muema trained as a pharmacist at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and proceeded to do a PhD in Immunology at the Open University/University of Liverpool, UK. In his scientific career, he has made significant contributions to the understanding of HIV, malaria, and COVID-19. His main focus has been on the generation of new knowledge that can guide the development of vaccines. He has been particularly interested in the assessment of the nature of immune responses that are induced by candidate vaccines, with the aim of using such information to refine the vaccines for optimal effectiveness.
Dr. Muema is a Senior Scientist at KAVI Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) and Thematic Head of the Immunology Unit at the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Nairobi. He also has interests in the utilization of scientific findings in the general promotion of healthy lifestyles and preventive medicine.

Dr. kefa joins the Institute as part of our Research Innovation division which concentrates on pioneering research methodologies and innovative healthcare solutions. This division will lead efforts in developing cutting-edge treatment protocols and healthcare technologies. Dr. Bosire is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy, School of Pharmacy, at the University of Nairobi and has been a Researcher at KAVI Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) since 2004. Additionally, he is the training coordinator for the East Africa Kidney Institute (EAKI) and has served as a member of the University of Nairobi Senate.
Dr. Bosire earned his degree in Pharmacy and undertaken Master and Doctoral training in Pharmacy from University of Nairobi. He also holds a Master of Structural Molecular Biology from University of London, Masters in Health Professional Education from Stellenbosch University and advanced course in Curriculum development from Maastricht University. He initially worked with the Ministry of Health at the National Drug Quality Control Laboratories and served in several regulatory committees of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and continues to serve as Chair of the technical working group for the Ministry of Health Stakeholder forum on Snakebites, an activity he has partially supported through one of his grants.

Roles: Lead at thesickle cell disease clinic, both at the General Hospital and the comprehensive care center in Mumias Level 4 hospital. Also part of the team that contributed to the launch of the hospital AMR guidelines.
Been attending to patients with Sickle cell disease for the past 5 years across western Kenya.
Education: MBCHB, ongoing MPH Health system management- Maseno University, set to join Postgraduate this September at Moi University to do pediatrics and child health
