The H.E.R. (Health, Empowerment, Resilience) project creates culturally sensitive, sustainable solutions to improve women’s health, resilience, and empowerment in Northern Kenya, addressing intersecting challenges through health education, wellness centres, and climate adaptation.
The H.E.R. (Health, Empowerment, Resilience) project, led by the Wellness Institute Trust (WIT), addresses the interconnected health, societal, and environmental challenges faced by women in Northern Kenya. Women in these communities contend with barriers such as limited healthcare access, harmful practices like FGM and early marriage, food insecurity, and climate vulnerabilities. H.E.R. is designed to provide comprehensive, scalable solutions that empower women and improve their well-being.
Through initiatives like using trusted community spaces to deliver Hepatitis B education and vaccinations, benefiting over 2,000 women, and implementing mental health programs in schools that reduce stigma and improve resilience, the project fosters lasting impact. Advocacy campaigns amplify local voices, challenge harmful norms, and foster leadership. Free medical camps provide critical health services, and training programs empower community health champions to sustain these efforts.
Our partners include Climate and Health Connect (CHC), which integrates climate adaptation into health programs; Africa Leadership and Dialogue Institute (ALADI), which amplifies community voices through storytelling and advocacy; and WIT, which delivers critical health interventions. Together, we create systemic and generational change in underserved communities. Looking ahead, the project will expand to establish wellness centers offering culturally sensitive maternal and mental health support, alongside climate resilience training that equips women with skills for sustainable agriculture and water conservation. The project aims to scale these efforts to reach 20,000 women and girls, ensuring long-term resilience and empowerment.
